What buyers want in 2024

Ever wondered what property buyers really want? Well the latest search data from realestate.com.au is in, revealing the most popular commonly searched terms of 2024 across all states and territories.  

So without further ado, the winning property key words for 2024 are…

Swimming pool

Swimming pool ranks as the No 1 search term across the nation.

Unsurprisingly it topped the wishlist of buyers in the warmest states such as Queensland, New South Wales, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia.

But interestingly it also took out poll position in South Australia, and ranked No 2 in Victoria and the ACT, then placed as the third most searched term in Tasmania.

Garage

Yep we’re a nation of car lovers, and those vehicles need a designated home, which is why garage came in as the second most searched term nationally.

Breaking it down into states, it was the most popular search term in Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania, came in second in NSW, SA and WA, ranked third in Queensland and the NT.

Outdoor area

Outdoor area is a perennially popular feature on a lot of buyers’ wishlists and in 2024 that trend showed no sign of slowing with the term currently ranking third nationally.

But here’s where things get interesting…it’s the third most popular term in Victoria, the fourth most popular in WA and the ACT, then ranks No 5 in NSW, Queensland, SA, Tasmania, and the NT.

Single storey   

With an aging population, it’s no surprise single storey is high on the list, sitting in fourth position nationally.

In terms of the states and territories, it ranks sixth in Queensland, SA, WA and the ACT, seventh in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, but doesn’t feature in the top 10 at all for the NT.

Air conditioning

Yes, we love our creature comforts, with air conditioning ranking fifth on the most common search term list across the country.

There’s no surprises where it came in the highest, ranking second in Queensland and the NT, third in NSW, SA, and WA, fifth in Victoria and the ACT, and sixth in Tasmania.

Rounding out the top 10

Rounding out the top 10 search terms nationally were:

  1. Ensuite
  2. balcony
  3. Pet friendly
  4. Study
  5. Shed

Meanwhile, there were some discrepancies between the states.

Heating appears on the wishlist for buyers in ACT, Tasmania and Victoria. Built-in robes is a top 10 search term in every state and territory except Victoria. Dishwasher also makes a regular appearance in the list across the country, while NT buyers value solar, and Queensland buyers search dual living.
